| Our genes provide us with certain potentials, and our environment tends to influence the directions in which those potentials are developed. The power of Evolutionary Psychology is that it shows us how our minds evolved, and how we may consciously use our minds to evolve our behaviour. The power of Cognitive Psychology lies in its ability to teach us how to think our way out of emotional hijackings. They are the ways and the means. Their strength lies in the fact that they are both as much art form as they are hard science. |
| A unique aspect of this time is that we now have a greater knowledge of our past, and probable future, than at any previous time in our history. Possibly the most important expansion of knowledge has been into areas relating to our brains, our minds, and our emotions. Our need is to sort out that which is relevant to us at any given time. Change is unavoidable. Even when your life is idyllic, just perfect the way it is, changes will occur. You will make them happen, or they will happen to you. To change your personal future, it is necessary to change your view of the past. |
| When you alter your attitudes, you change your environment. At first, nothing physically changes in your personal environs, but your view of it will. Then the other changes will follow. You will also become a change in the environments of those closest to you. When you set out to change yourself, you are starting on a journey through time. You may wonder why I spend much time in backgrounding our past when it is the future that you are concerned in dealing with. Darwinian natural selection only produces adaptation, i.e. change, as a response to changing local environment. We need to see our lives in evolutionary terms. The evolutionary tree did not stop growing when humankind evolved. Our branch grew lesser branches in proliferate array, each family is a twig upon it. You are the outermost tip of that twig. |
